Frequently asked questions

The yard visit
Q) How long does the photography session take?
A) It should take about an hour depending on what you want pictures of. Longer visits can be arranged in advance but an extra charge per hour will be applicable - please contact us for further details.
Q) There's a few people in the yard who want pictures taken. Can we share a callout?
A) Yes that's fine, although you will have to decide amongst yourselves how to split the costs and photographs included in any package. Please note that this will mean less time per person though for the visit unless a longer session is arranged (see above).
Q) What do I need to do on the day of the visit?
A) Please make sure your horse is clean and brushed and has clean tack. If you want pictures of flatwork or jumps please ensure the arena / field is tidy (this makes the pictures much nicer) and any jumps needed are built.
Q) I live outside the 25mile radius. What are your charges outside this area and how are the distances calculated?
A) Journeys further than the 25mile radius are charged at 50p per 2 miles (25p there, 25p back). This is due to the extra fuel and time required. Distances are calculated using the AA website journey calculator to the nearest village or postcode (if available). You will be contacted about the final call out charge before the visit to avoid any surprises.
Q) What if the weather is bad?
A) Obviously your horse will look its best on a nice sunny day but good results can be obtained even in rain. If the weather is forecast to be very bad please ring the evening before and we can arrange a different date if nesessary.
Q) I have an indoor school - is this a problem?
A) There shouldn't be much of a problem even though indoor schools have much less light available in them than you might think. Higher ISO levels (film sensitivity or the digital equivalent) can be used with only a small degradation in the final image.
Q) I need to cancel the visit - how much notice do you need?
A) If you need to cancel please let us know the evening before at the very latest. Any cancellations that occur after we have travelled to your location but before any photographs have been taken will be charged at £15 plus any extra mile charges previously agreed. Commencement of photography is considered acceptance of the commission and will be charged at the full package rate.
Q) How many pictures will you take?
A) As many as is needed! The initial shoot will be reviewed and the best made available for viewing and ordering.
Cboosing and ordering photographs
Q) How can I choose which prints I want?
A) The images are available for viewing in the client pages of the gallery section of the web site. Please choose the size and image name and contact us with your selection.
Q) When is payment due?
A) Payment for the visit and photography session is payable on the day by cash or cheque. Any additional prints can be ordered as desired and will be processed when payment arrives. Please make cheques payable to photo-equestrian and post them to the address on the contact page.
Q) How are the photographs packaged and presented?
A) Photographs will be posted to you in card backed envelopes for added protection or poster tubes if needed. Photos are provided unmounted unless specified.
Q) How long will the photographs take to arrive?
A) Depending on what sizes you require, please allow about 1-2 weeks for delivery for pictures that are part of your initial package. Additional prints will take a similar amount of time after further payment is received. Electronic images will arrive much faster as no printing is required.
Q) I have ordered some electronic images on CD. How many prints an I allowed to make and at what size?
A) You are allowed to make one print of any size you like for personal use only. Copyright remains with Photo-Equestrian. If asked in a print shop if you own the copyright for the image (they usually have to ask this) say you have written permission from the holder and show them the reproduction permission slip that comes with your order if required.
Q) I want to put some of the pictures up on my website or blog. Is this allowed?
A) As part of both packages a free low resolution, watermarked image will be supplied on cd for you to upload to your personal website / blog if you wish. Any attempt to remove the watermark will be considered a breach of the terms and conditions.
Q) I'm selling my horse - can I use your photo in the advert?
A) Yes! Please use the watermarked image supplied and acknowlege Photo-Equestrian in the main text.
Q) Are the images from national events in the gallery available to buy?
A) Images from national events are not currently for sale to the general public, and should be seen as an example of work.
Q) Who owns the copyright to the images?
A) All images remain the copyright of Photo-Equestrian. No use, reproduction or redistribution of images without written permission. Re-selling of any images is strictly forbidden.
Misc questions
Q) What equipment do you use?
A) Photographs are taken using a Canon 30D digital camera and Canon 70-200L IS f/2.8 for action shots and portraits or a Canon 50mm f/1.8 for portraits.
Q) Do you do local event photography?
A) Yes if we are not at the show competing ourselves!
Q) All these terms and conditions and copyright declarations seem a little Draconian! What's going on?
A) In this age where photography especially seems a devalued art it is getting much harder for photographers of any level to make money from their hobby or profession.
This is not helped by large broadcasting and publishing institutions requesting public submissions (which by the way you can sign all rights away without even knowing it- a broadcaster could use your image on its logo or in its programme without paying for it and then can sell it on to someone else without even acknowledging you!) so they can avoid paying for services. If it's good enough to publish then it's good enough for them to pay for it no matter who the photographer is. Therefore there have to be ways for photographers to protect their investment in both time and equipment, hence all the terms and conditions.
